Hydrogen-Natural Gas Blending Initiatives


SoCalGas is among the first utilities in the nation to test the effects of a hydrogen blend on natural gas infrastructure and equipment in a controlled field environment. This effort utilizes the same engineering and technology that will be used to blend into the natural gas grid in the future. The use of hydrogen, either blended with natural gas, or delivered via a dedicated pipeline, is one important component of SoCalGas' strategy to achieve net zero emissions in its operations and the energy it delivers by 2045. To better understand how clean fuels like renewable hydrogen could be delivered at scale through California's existing natural gas system, demonstration is an important next step in establishing a statewide injection standard for renewable hydrogen that would promote California's clean energy and resiliency goals.
This presentation will provide an overview of SoCalGas hydrogen-natural gas blending initiatives. It will cover the challenges and knowledge gaps we are facing, the areas we are focusing on, as well as the demonstration projects we are conducting.


Dr. Jin Zhang has more than 16 years of experience in oil & gas, and energy industry. She is a Senior Engineer in the Hydrogen Blending Strategy Team at SoCalGas, managing engineering activities leading to the successful development and execution of hydrogen blending demonstration projects. She is an active member of several industrial working groups, including Center for Hydrogen Safety’s Safety Culture Working Group and its Natural Gas-Hydrogen Blending Working Group. She also serves as a planning committee member for the Western Energy Institute’s Hydrogen Engineers Forum.
Jin holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Louisiana State University. She is a Professional Mechanical Engineer licensed in California.
