Building Sector Decarbonization, WA State Policy Overview
The building sector represents approximately one-fifth of Washington’s greenhouse gas emissions, second only to the transportation sector. The building sector has the fastest growing emissions currently. In order to reach the state’s greenhouse gas emissions limits in statute, continued progress on reducing emissions in buildings is critical. This session will provide a review of building sector recommendations from the State Energy Strategy, in addition to an overview of current policy to support building sector decarbonization in Washington including the first in nation state-wide existing building performance standard, energy codes and appliance standards.
Luke Howard is a Building Performance Specialist for the Building Standards and Performance Unit at the Washington State Department of Commerce where he is currently the technical lead for the Washington State’s Clean Buildings Law. Luke has over 15 years of experience in research, analysis, and implementation of building performance design strategies, codes and standards in the Northwest. His experience includes educating and advising industry and the public about, indoor environmental quality, building performance standards and codes.
