Presentation Title:

The Clean Hydrogen Civil War and its Implications for Decarbonization

As cleaner ways of producing clean hydrogen have been developed, colors have been used to describe the different processes. Notwithstanding the DOE, and more recently the Infrastructure & Jobs Act defining clean hydrogen without reference to colors, the practice persists and within the clean hydrogen industry there is fight over what's clean, and even the notion that there is only one clean hydrogen. This is unique in clean energy and has serious implications for decarbonization.

Mike Hopkins is an entrepreneurial cleantech CEO and thought leader in the fields of energy transition, energy storage and hydrogen.
He currently leads Bakken Energy, a clean hydrogen company developing a regional clean hydrogen hub in the Upper Midwest.
Prior to becoming CEO of Bakken Energy, Mike served as CEO of Ice Energy, a pioneering thermal energy storage business that now operates as Thule Energy Storage.
Before leading Ice Energy, Mike practiced law for 18 years as a partner with Bennett Jones LLP, a preeminent Canadian law firm recognized internationally as a leader in the fields of energy and climate change. He helped his clients successfully develop and finance over $12 billion of power projects in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK.
Mike sits on various for profit and not-for-profit boards, including the Board of Plus Power, a leading battery storage developer, Nelumbo, a cutting edge nanotechnology company and the Committee for Economic Development of the Conference Board.
