Benchmarking and Improving Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Performance in Multifamily Housing
Eden Housing operates solar electricity facilities on 88 multifamily affordable housing communities that generate over 6 million kilowatt hours and offset nearly 10 million pounds of CO2 per year. Eden is a leader in the effort to implement California’s Solar in Multi-Family Affordable Housing (SOMAH) Program that provides solar electricity credits to common area and resident accounts. This presentation will instruct attendees on how to predict and maintain solar energy performance from onsite photovoltaic and solar thermal systems. I will also review energy efficiency, decarbonization and electrification strategies for multifamily housing developers and managers.
Tom is responsible for planning and implementing energy, water, and waste disposal cost-saving measures and related capital projects for the entire Eden Housing portfolio of 160 multifamily communities across California. He also develops education and training resources for property maintenance staff and residents to increase recycling, waste diversion and conservation of natural resources.
Tom manages Eden’s renewable energy assets and works with property operations, resident services and asset managers to benchmark building energy, water and trash costs and usage, improve resident engagement and comfort, and improve the net operating income of the portfolio.
Tom is member of the California Housing Partnership’s Green Rental Energy Efficiency Network (GREEN) Advisory Board, and was a member of the Advisory Working Group for the Enterprise Community Partners’ Green Communities Criteria.
Prior to his current position at Eden Housing, Tom was Executive Director of Energy Auditor and Retrofitter, Inc., and publisher of Home Energy magazine, the national trade journal for residential energy efficiency, HVAC and green building professionals.
