Presentation Title:

Rewards for Eligible Company Business Activities: How Research and Development Tax Credits Propel Innovation in the Green Building Industry

Track A: Implementing Energy Efficiency

Session A1: Federal, State, and Local Energy Programs

Day 1  3:00 pm

A myriad of ways to benefit from the R&D tax credit have opened up with the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). A year later, there are some updates. This presentation is designed to explain the recently expanded R&D tax credit and how it is utilized to increase innovation by building designers, engineers, and equipment manufacturers in the High Performance and Green Building Industries. We will discuss how the credit allows for increased experimentation with new energy technologies and green design methods, as well as how to identify R&D-eligible activities. We will cover how equipment manufacturers developing new and/or improved green technologies or conforming to LEED standards use the tax credit to buffer the risks associated with innovation. We will also explain how designers and end-users that incorporate these new technologies and methods into their processes can ease the initial cost of implementation and integration using the tax credit. We will be providing new strategies created by new legislation, for companies at all stages of the technology chain, to use the R&D credit to improve upon their products and processes more effectively. Building and equipment designer case studies that demonstrate these successes will also be provided.
