Presentation Title:
Enterprise-Wide Decarbonization of an Industrial Asset Set
Abstract
According to NetZeroTracker, more than 300 large publicly traded companies headquartered in the United States have pledged to be carbon neutral, reach zero carbon emissions, and/or significantly reduce carbon emissions within the next 25 years. This presentation will focus on the commitments and actions taken by firms operating primarily within the Industrial Sector.
The approach to decarbonization in the Industrial Sector is necessarily more complex than approaches to the residential or commercial sector, given the scope of manufacturing and industrial processes across an enterprise. Even within a single industrial production or manufacturing site, there are often multiple and complex processes with unique energy consumption profiles-----and GHG emission characteristics. Yet, decarbonizing the Industrial Sector is critical as it comprises more than 30% of U.S. primary energy-related CO2 emissions.(DOE Industrial Decarbonization RoadMap)
The presenters will discuss specific initiatives industrial firms are taking to reduce GHG emissions at major industrial locations, inclusive of lower carbon fuel sources, process heating and recovery, water/wastewater management, electrification, digitization, efficient motors and drives, electrochemical processes, renewable energy deployment, and energy efficiency measures. Industrial decarbonization strategies will be considered against the following variables: a) Technology, b) Degree of Automation, c) Plant/Process Vintage, d) Geography/Climate, e) Regulatory Requirements, and f) Workforce Skills and Development. The presenters will also explore opportunities to scale across facilities through vertical markets, chemical processes, and industrial processes. The presenters will also analyze industrial decarbonization from a risk management standpoint. Which industrial processes and operations carry the most potential for spontaneous carbon emissions? How can these risks be mitigated in the planning and incident response phases?
The presenters will share best practices and lessons learned in the industrial decarbonization journey.
